Our school system is centered on the individual: homework, grades, and promotions are all matters related to the self, to the “I”. Even companies encourage us to think in terms of the first person singular: we are selected, hired, and compensated individually.

In the world, however, there aren’t many things we can tackle or solve on our own: the world is a complex place and constantly forces us to replace “I” with “WE.”

When it comes to assigning or taking on professional responsibilities, this issue arises with particular intensity: whatever the responsibility may be, it involves collaboration—something we aren’t always ready to ask for or grant.
